One of the key incentives among others, for the international student population in Canada University for Masters or Undergraduate programs, is the added value and study abroad benefits of being eligible for a PGWP [Post graduation work permit]. Last week, on 8th January, IRCC announced that international graduates with a Canadian post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that has expired or will expire soon are eligible for a new open work permit. Post-graduation work permit holders can take advantage of the new open work permit beginning 27th January to 27th July 2021.
The basic rule for PGWP Canada eligibility, which permits students to be employed full-time, part-time, or is self-employed, continues to be that the student completes the program from a DLI [Designated Learning Institution] or in common terminology PGWP Canada college list. The maximum validity of PGWP duration in Canada is a three year period.
More than 52,000 international graduates in Canada will benefit from this initiative taken by IRCC. This goes a long way for IRCC to showcase to the world their support to international students during the pandemic phase. This also is a positive move towards encouraging students to contribute to the Canadian economy during their stint as a student and also continue their path through immigration, finally resulting in becoming a Permanent Resident Visa holder in Canada or PR after PGWP in Canada.
